Mekdela tackles society’s views on plus-size people and campaigns for body positivity in Plus-Size: A Memoir of Pop Culture, Fatphobia, and Social Change. This book is an essay collection that analyzes and gives important insight into fatphobia, its psychological effects on the people scorned, the circumstances of the people affected, and various other factors on the topic.

Mekdela’s Memoir of Pop Culture, Fatphobia, and Social Change has a down-to-earth narrative that gets to the heart and provoked my thoughts and feelings on the subject. The narrative was relatable and Mekdela does a wonderful job of keeping the stream of information both interesting and informative. Reading the author’s own experiences and observations concerning the discrimination and prejudice against people with certain body types helped me look deeper into the current problems of today’s society and gave me a new point of view on the different expectations and perspectives others have on plus-sized people.

Plus-Size by Mekdela is a treasure trove of various scenarios and each has a lesson to be learned. I enthusiastically absorbed the wide range of topics the book discusses, such as various factors that affect weight, the consequences of such weight gain, the desperate methods some people resort to in order to lose it, and the compassion weaved in among the words creates an outstanding chronicle that informs and moves the heart. It is a quick read but it presents a wealth of information and paints a bigger picture through various scenarios regarding misconceptions, body positivity and negativity, and many more! I found this to be a life-changing read!”
